Musculoskeletal ultrasound is used to investigate the soft tissue of the body. This includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves. It also has the ability to interrogate bony surfaces and cartilaginous structures.
There are a variety of common applications including: Shoulder, Hip, Groin, Knee, Ankle, Elbow, Wrist, Hands and Feet.
Other applications include the investigation of any region of the body where pathology may be found eg – skin or subcutaneous areas.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound can detect:It is fast becoming the investigation of choice in many sports injuries.
Interventional UltrasoundUltrasound can also be used to accurately guide various needle procedures into the body.
These include: Aspirations of haematomas, fluid collections, injections of steroids into joint spaces, guidance of needles during biopsy procedures.
